Harm, Mac, and Noah arrived home to find a house full of anxious people. "How's Rena doing?" Evelyn asked. "She's doing as good as can be expected," Harm replied with a sigh. "There was a small blood clot in her brain, which apparently, they didn't catch the first time around." Mac glanced over at her husband. He had been up since 6 am and was looking a bit pale. She took his hand in hers. "I think you need a nap, Harm." Noah put an arm around Evelyn as she watched her father worriedly. "He'll be all right, honey. He's the strongest man I know." "I agree, but at what point do even the strongest fall?" *********** Christiana sat on her bed, knees drawn up to her chest. *It's your fault Rena was hurt! After all, it was your idea to ask her.* "I'm so sorry, Rena," she whispered, tears falling from her eyes. "God, I am such an idiot!" Christiana got up from bed and rushed over to her dresser. She screamed and shoved everything off of it. She looked at her tear-stained face in the mirror. "BITCH!" she cried, punching it. Christiana stared at her bleeding fist in fascination. *********** Mac was just finishing setting the table for lunch when she heard a scream. "Mommy," Maddie exclaimed, rushing into the kitchen. "What is it?" she asked. "Christy, she's gone crazy!" Harm, Trisha, Nicholas, Evelyn, Noah, and Hannah met them at the door. "I just left her for five minutes," Trisha explained. "I don't know what happened." "Harm, let me talk to her. Breakfast is ready, why don't you take them down and when we're finished we'll visit Rena." Harm nodded slowly. "Come on, kids," he replied, watching as Mac entered the bedroom. He took a shaky breath. "Dad, are you okay?" Nicholas asked. "Just fine, Sport." ************ Mac found Christiana staring at her hand. "Sweetheart, are you all right?" she asked, glancing at the room. Christiana apparently didn't hear her. "Chris," Mac tried again, placing a hand on her daughter's shoulder. "What!" she growled, turning around. Mac took a step back. "What's the matter with you?" "I-I'm sorry, Mom! I'm so sorry! It's my fault Rena got hurt." "No, no," Mac replied, taking Christiana into her arms, "It wasn't your fault!" Christiana pulled away. "Yes it was! God, I was so stupid! I should have died in that accident!" Mac gasped. "Please don't ever say anything like that again! It was a mistake. It's what makes us human." She took Christiana's injured hand carefully into hers. "Lets get this cleaned up." Christiana nodded. "Mom." "Yeah, honey?" "I love you." "I love you too." ************ Everyone was just about finished breakfast when Mac came back down. "Trish, if you're finished eating, Christy would like to talk to you." "Ok," Trisha replied, throwing her paper plate away. She gave her mother a peck on the cheek and ran upstairs. "Is Christy all right?" Harm asked. Mac nodded. "I think she'll be fine." "Grandma, are we going to see Aunt Rena?" Hannah pulled on Mac's arm excitedly. Evelyn saw that her parents needed some time alone. "Come on, lets go get ready guys." Mac smiled at Evelyn as the troops followed her. She always knew when they needed time. "Harm, I think the question is, are YOU all right?" "Sarah, I thought she was dead." Mac wrapped her arms around him. "I-I haven't lost any of my children, but I'm afraid I'm going to. I've been able to keep that thought from my mind for years and now..." Mac's stomach did flip-flops. "I know, honey, I've been feeling the same lately. We just have to take one day at a time. Isn't that what you always tell our children?" "It is." "Then lets do it! As soon as Rena is released from the hospital, we'll both take off work. If the doctor says it's all right, then we'll go to Florida. The kids will love it." He smiled. "And we'll get Evie and Noah to take them to Disney World while we go out for dinner and take a stroll on Cocoa beach." "Sounds like a plan, Sailor!" |
