"You're drunk aren't you?" Harm looked at Mac. "They are?" Trisha nodded slowly, tears in her eyes. "Doctor Lewis has been helping us. Is Rena okay?" "Please tell me that neither of you were driving," Mac said, ignoring Trisha's question." "No," Christiana said, taking a deep breath. "Rena was, and someone else hit us." Doctor Greene entered again. "Mr. and Mrs. Rabb. There's a detective here who'd like to speak to you." "We'll be right back, girls," Mac said. "Detective Mason," he said, shaking their hands. "The person who hit Serena was drunk. Her name is," he looked at his notes. "Tonya Simpson. Apparently she, as well as your daughters, were at a blow out party earlier this evening." Mac nodded. "We knew they were going to a party, we just didn't know it was going to be so crazy." "Parents usually don't, Ma'am." "Is Tonya all right?" Harm asked. "She's a little banged up and has one helluva hang over. She should be fine tomorrow. If I could get your phone number, I'll contact you if I have any more questions for you." Harm told him. "Thank you, Detective." "Have a nice night," he replied. Mac crossed her arms. "'Have a nice night'," she muttered. "I'll give him a nice night." Harm put a restraining hand on her shoulder. "He's just being polite, honey. Why don't you go see how Rena's doing and I'll go tell Maddie and Ni what's going on. I'm sure they'll want to see their sisters." "Yeah, and you need to remind them how stupid it is to get drunk!" ************ Christiana and Trisha were discharged that night while Serena had to remain for observation. There was so much tension in the car you could cut it with a knife. Maddie glanced over at her sisters. She leaned over to whisper in Nicholas' ear. "Are Mom and Dad sure the car didn't hit them?" Nicholas nodded, stifling a laugh. He knew his parents weren't very happy about the whole situation. "Dad, I'm going to be sick!" Trisha cried out. Harm quickly pulled over to the side of the road and the girl jumped out. Mac followed, helping her. She may be upset with them, but she knew how bad it felt. Harm glanced up in the rearview mirror. He could see Nicholas and Maddie whispering to one another. "If I so much as hear you snicker, you'll both have a bathroom to clean in the morning." *********** Mac opened the front door and was surprised to see Evelyn, Noah, and Hannah. "Grandma!!" "Oh my God!" she exclaimed, giving Hannah a hug, "I didn't think you were coming until tomorrow!" "Well, Noah wrapped up his case early so we decided to surprise you," Evelyn replied. Mac smiled at Hannah, kissing her on the cheek. "That's great! However, you may be a little disappointed. The twins are currently being punished and your father had to get Rena from the hospital." "What happened now?" Evelyn asked with a groan. "I mean, Rena's all right, isn't she?" "Noah, why don't you bring your suitcases up to the guest room. I'll make some coffee and I'll tell you all about it." Evelyn grinned. "Tea for me please, Mom." "Okay, who are you and what have you done with my coffee drinking daughter?" "She's still here, but--" Hannah cut her off. "But the baby inside her doesn't like it!" "What?" Mac asked excitedly. "You're pregnant!" Noah came down the stairs, smiling. "We just found out about it yesterday. The doctor said since Evie's not very far along, it would be all right for her fly. Lets go into the kitchen and talk about what's been going on." "We need to have a dikcushon, Grandma." Mac laughed. "You're right about that Hannah." ************** Serena stared out the car window, lost in thought. Why didn't she pay attention to what was around her? What could she have done to prevent the accident? Why did she have to agree to driving her sisters to begin with? The answer to the last question was simple. If she hadn't driven, they would have themselves and the accident would have been worse. She glanced over at her her father. He was awfully quiet... "Dad?" Clearing his throat, Harm said, "What is it, honey?" "Are you mad at me?" "No, Rena. The accident wasn't your fault. However, I'm surprised you didn't use better judgement regarding your sisters and this party. You should have told us where you were going. I'm not putting blame on you for anything. When I got that call last night..." He took a deep breath. "God, it scared the shit out of me." Serena noticed tears in her eyes. There weren't many times she'd seen him cry. "I'm sorry, Dad." He smiled, glancing over at her. It's all right, Rena. I'm just glad you're all okay." His smile faded when Serena closed her eyes tight. "Rena?" "My head hurts," she gasped, clutching it in pain. Harm's heart jumped into his throat and adrenaline kicked in. He pulled into a parking lot and headed back to the hospital. "Rena? Rena, answer me!" He looked over at her again. Serena had passed out. |
