"Mommy, are you okay?" Nicholas asked, looking up from his drawing. Mac didn't hear him. Her head was spinning and there was a steady pounding resonating in her ears. She felt herself falling to the floor before she could grab onto anything. "Mommy!" the little boy cried. "Evie!!!" Evelyn rushed into the kitchen, her sisters hot on her trail. "Rena, give me the phone!" Serena did and rounded up the little ones. "911 emergency." "My mom just fainted!" "What's your name, dear?" "Evelyn." "All right, Evelyn. What's your address?" Evelyn gave it to the woman. "An ambulance is on the way. Can you tell me what happened?" Evelyn took a deep breath. "I'm not really sure. My little brother screamed for her and when I got in here, she was on the floor." As an, afterthought, she added, "She's pregnant, does that mean anything?" "It's possible, honey. You should go outside and wait for the ambulance now." **************** Harm rushed down the hospital corridor, stopping when he arrived at the nurse's station. "Excuse me, I'm looking for Sarah Rabb. She was brought in about twenty minutes ago." "Have a seat, and I'll let you know when I hear something," the young nurse replied, not looking up from the magazine she was reading. Another nurse standing a few feet away heard the exchange. "Lucy, what did I tell you about reading while on duty?" she scolded. She then turned to Harm. "Mrs. Rabb's husband?" "Yes," Harm replied. "Is she all right?" "Come with me. "I'm sorry about that, Mr. Rabb. She still has much to learn." Harm nodded as the nurse led him into a room. He saw Mac asleep on the bed. "The Doctor will be right in." "Thank you." Harm took Mac's hand in his, leaning over to kiss her on the lips. This was something they did not need right now! First, Evelyn and Serena start having nightmares, then someone e-mails Mac saying Harm was having an affair, and now this! "Harm." He looked up to see Mac's doctor, Beth Michels. "She's going to be fine." He nodded. "What happened?" "Stress. What's been going on in that household of yours?" Beth asked, checking the fetal heart monitor. "I know you have five children, but I thought you had gotten the hang of it by now." "Where do I start?" Harm sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Rena and Evie are starting to remember the past. They've been having horrible nightmares. Sarah and I don't know what to do about it." "Have you thought about taking the girls to a psychiatrist?" "We thought about going as a family," he replied. Beth continued to listen as Harm recounted the most recent events. She wondered how a family could go through so much. What had they done to deserve such hardship? |
