Evelyn looked up from the magazine she was flipping through to see her father and Maddie. She immediately jumped from the chair and took the little girl from him. "Are you all right, Evie?" he asked. She smiled. "I'm fine. I'll be in the waiting room. Do you need me to call anyone?" "Call Frank and let him know what's going on. Tell him they can come home as soon as possible." Harm pulled his daughter close to him. He kissed Evelyn's forehead, then Maddie's. "Thank you, Evie." "Anytime, Dad." He watched her leave then walked over to Mac's bedside. Harm took a deep breath and brushed her lips with his. Mac stirred and opened her eyes. "Harm?" "Yeah, honey, it's me." Mac blinked, not sure what she was hearing. Did Harmon Rabb just call her 'honey'? She decided she would ignore it... it was probably the head injury. "I'm so glad you're all right," Harm was saying. "When Evie called, I feared the worst." "Evie?" Mac asked. Harm nodded, smiling. "Our daughter is all grown up. She saved your life." "Daughter?" Harm's smile faded. "Harm, what are you talking about, we don't have a daughter!" "Dad, Aunt Harriet's here, she said..." Evelyn trailed off. She saw the look on her Dad's face. "What's wrong?" Harm took a deep breath. "Evie, have you seen the doctor?" "Yeah, he's just down the hall, do you want me to get him?" He nodded. "I'll be right back," she told him in confusion. "Harm, will you please tell me what the hell is going on?" Before Harm could reply, the doctor entered. "Mr. Rabb, if you would give me a few minutes, I'd like to examine my patient." Harm nodded slowly and walked out into the hall. This was his worst nightmare. No, this wasn't happening! No one is going to tell him that Mac would never remember their life together. No one is ever going to tell his children that their mother doesn't remember them! "Dad!" A slap to the face brought him back to his senses. "Daddy, what's wrong?" Evelyn asked. She stared at him in disbelief as he told her what happened. ************ Mac stared miserably at the ceiling above her. Selective amnesia, that's what it was called. She could remember things that happened to her 20 years ago. Before she married Harm, before she had children, but she couldn't remember what happened a month ago. It was that Chief Corpsman Hodge again. Apparently he had kidnapped her and her youngest daughter, Maddie. What the hell did he want? She couldn't remember that much either. She was broken from her thoughts when there was a knock on the door. "Come in," she said. "Hi, Harriet." "Hi, Sarah. Are you feeling any better?" She nodded. "My head isn't pounding as much anymore. I still feel awful about what this is doing to Harm and our children. I can't believe that I'm really married to him. Harriet, this all feels like a dream." "Believe me when I say it's not," Harriet replied. "There was a time that everyone at JAG thought you two would never be married, but now that you are, everything is as it should be. I'm confident that your memories will come back." Mac smiled. "Thanks, Harriet." "You're getting released tomorrow morning, right?" Mac nodded. "The children have been looking forward to seeing you and trying to help you remember." "I can't wait to see them either." |
