Evelyn was greeted with snickers of laughter Monday morning. Ignoring them, she took her seat and opened up the book she had to read for English class. Tony walked over to Evelyn and pulled the book out of her hands. She glared up at him. "I was reading that," she said, standing up. Evelyn almost laughed. She was a whole foot taller than Tony. She never noticed it before. "Your point?" Tony asked, tossing the book under the teacher's desk. "You better watch out for me, Rabb." Evelyn idely wondered why people threatened everyone in their family. "And you're going to do, what, Tony?" she said, looming over him. "This!" he exclaimed, aiming a fist at her stomach. Evelyn blocked it with her hand then slammed her knee into his crotch. Tony fell down in an embarrassed heap. ************* "Evie, you have a phone call." Mac smiled as her daughter came up to her. "It's Tom." Evelyn grinned as she took the phone. She then affixed her mother with a look. "I know when I'm not wanted," Mac said, heading to the kitchen. "What's on that?" Mac asked, as Harm pulled a pizza from the oven. "Pizza, what does it look like?" Mac crossed her arms. "I mean, what's on it?" "Calm down, Marine. It's half pepperoni, half veggie." "If there is so much as an olive on..." Mac trailed off. She suddenly felt really sick to her stomach. "Mac?" She rushed to the bathroom. "Daddy, what's wrong with Mommy?" Nicholas asked concerned. "I'm not sure," he replied. "Just tell your sisters dinner's ready while I go check on her." "K, Daddy!" "Mac," Harm said again. He knelt next to her on the floor. "Are you all right?" She looked up at him. "I think I'm pregnant." ********** Christiana glanced over at her big sister, who was doing her homework. "Evie..." "Yeah, Christy?" she asked, not looking up. "I heard Mommy and Daddy talking before. What does it mean when somebody's fertile?" Evelyn's head shot up and she began laughing hysterically. Serena, Trisha, and Nicholas came running in. "What's so funny?" Serena wanted to know. Christiana shrugged. "I just asked her a question and she started laughing." "Tell us!" Trisha exclaimed, jumping up and down. She absolutely hated being left out of things. "I just asked her what being fertile means." Serena began laughing too. "No way!" Trisha and Nicholas stared at one another. They didn't get it. "We're home!" Mac called from the hallway. She and Harm came into the living room. "What happened?" Harm asked. Serena and Evelyn both tried to explain it, but they coudln't catch their breath. Harm looked over at the other three. "Well?" "Christy asked Evie a question," Trisha replied. "I guess it was funny, but we can't figure out why." Mac nodded. "What did she ask?" "What's fertile?" Nicholas shouted to his mom, running over to her. "What is it? Candy?" Harm tried to keep a straight face, but wasn't succeeding. "Um, you guys are too little to know about that yet. When you're older we'll let you know." "I gotta pee!" Serena said, rushing to the bathroom. "So do I!" Evelyn cried out, heading to the one upstairs. Mac smiled. "Just think, one more to add to the bunch." "You're gonna have another baby?" Christiana asked excitedly, her question forgotten. "Yeah," Harm said. "In nine months, you'll have another little brother or sister." The kids squealed in excitement. "What's going on?" Evelyn asked. Serena was right behind her. Nicholas bounded up to her. "Mommy's going to have another baby!!" "Really?" Serena said. "Yeah," Harm replied. "Mom's really fertile." Mac smacked her husband's arm. "Don't say things like that in front of the kids." "Mommy," Christiana said. "What's that mean?" "Ask your father." |
