Tom pulled up in front of the Rabb home. "Here you are." Evelyn smiled. "Thanks for everything, Tom. Um, do you mind me asking what school you go to?" "I go to St. Xavier. You go to Washington High, right?" "Yeah," she replied. She looked at her house. "Well, I guess I should be getting inside." When she was halfway out of the car, Tom said, "Evie, wait!" "Yeah?" "Can I call you?" She nodded. "I'd like that." Evelyn grabbed a piece of paper and a pen from her purse and wrote it down. "Thanks again, Tom." "Bye, Evie." Evelyn watched him leave then headed up to the house. When she reached the porch, it finally dawned her what could have happened if Tom hadn't come along. "My God..." she whispered, sinking to the porch stairs. ************ Mac heard a car drive away and glanced over at Harm. He was sound asleep. "'Mister I'm going to stay up until she gets home' my ass," she said with a laugh, heading to the front door. She was expecting Evelyn to be coming right in so when she didn't, she opened the door. The sight before her broke her heart. Evelyn was crying into her hands. "Evie!" Mac said, rushing to her side. Evelyn threw her arms around her mother. "Evie, you're shaking, what happened?" "Mommy, I was so stupid!" she cried. "Tony didn't ask me out because he liked me. He wanted... he wanted to..." Mac's eyes widened as she realized what her daughter was about to say. "But he didn't?" "N-no." "How did you get home?" Evelyn pulled herself together as best she could and looked at Mac. "This guy, Tom. He goes to St. Xavier. Tony left me alone with a friend of his. The guy tried to give me a beer and dragged me into the kitchen. Tom stopped him and took me home. He told me about Tony." "Oh honey, I'm so sorry!" Mac replied. "Are you all right?" Evelyn nodded slowly. "I-I think so. I want to go to bed now." "Okay--" Before Mac could continue, Evelyn got up and ran inside. She sat outside alone, crying for her little girl. |
