Title: Growing Up
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
Summary: Focuses mainly on Evie as she enters high school.

Fourteen year old Evelyn Rabb looked up at the building she was about
to enter.  This was going to be the biggest step of her life... high
school.  She really did not want to go in there.  She spent everyday of
her grade school career trying to fit in with her classmates who were a
year older than her.

Speaking of some of those classmates...  "Hi, Susan!" Evelyn said,
waving.  Susan and the other girl, Donna, looked at each other and
giggled.  Evelyn watched as they ran inside.  She took a deep breath,
determined not to cry. "I can do this," she whispered to herself.

Evelyn climbed up the stairs and entered the building, scanning the
hallway for her locker.  She found it, placed a few items into it, and
proceeded to find her classroom.

Evelyn sat in the last unoccupied seat in the room: front and center.
*Good,* she thought. *Now I won't have bother with their stares.*

"Good morning, students!" the short and plump woman said with a smile.
"For those who don't know me, my name is Mrs. Yeager..."

And so, her day began.  Evelyn decided that no matter what her
classmates thought of her, she would get through each day of high
school.

***************

Evelyn was waiting for the bus to pick her up when someone called out
her name.  She looked up to see Tony running over to her.  She had a
crush on him since fifth grade.  Evelyn could hardly believe her luck.
"Hi, Tony," she said shyly.

"Hey," he replied.  His green eyes were shining... *Quit it, Evie, and
pay attention to what he's saying!*  "Would you like to go out with me
tomorrow night?"

Evelyn's eyes widened.  "Really?" she asked.

"Yeah, really."  Tony searched her face for an answer.  "So...?"

"I'd love to!" Evelyn said.

"Great!  I'll pick you up at seven.  Looks like your bus is here.  See you
later!"

Evelyn was confused.  "Wait, you can drive?"  But she didn't receive a
reply, he was already gone.  With a shrug, she climbed into the bus.

"Daddy!"

"Hey, Sport," Harm said, as five year old Nicholas jumped into his
arms.  "How was your first day of kindergarten?"

Nicholas beamed.  "Fun!"  The little boy looked around.  "Where's
Mommy?  Is she home yet?"

"She went to pick up Serena and the twins," he replied, setting
Nicholas on the ground.  "Lets go inside and see about dinner."

Nicholas made a face.  "Are you making veg- vegta- veg-"

Harm smiled. "Vegetables?"

"Yeah, those."

"For myself and Evie.  Why, you want some too?"

"Ew, no way, Daddy!" Nicholas replied.  "I want a cheeseburger."

Harm laughed.  "Coming right up!"

*************

After dinner, the family sat in the living room together.  Mac was on
the couch with the twins, Serena and Evelyn were sharing the recliner,
and Harm was on the floor with Nicholas.

"So, how was your first day of high school, Evie?" Mac asked.

Evelyn blushed, thinking of Tony.  "Okay, I guess."

Harm glanced up at Mac, then back at his first born.  "What's that
blush all about?" he asked.

"I'm not blushing," Evelyn protested.  This caused her to turn a deeper
shade of red.

Serena laughed.  "Wow, your face is as red as a tomato!"

"Is Evie a tomato, Daddy?" Nicholas asked.

"No, I'm not!" Evelyn replied, crossing her arms.  "Mom, tell them to
stop picking on me!"

Christiana and Trisha looked at their sister.  "We didn't say anything."

"That's enough," Mac said.  "Serena, take your sisters and Nicholas
upstairs to get ready for bed."

Serena nodded and got up.  "Lets go troops!"

As soon as they were out of sight, Mac got up and smacked Harm in the
head.  "Ow! What was that for?"

"Picking on your daughter like that," she said.  "Come on, Evie. How
about some ice cream?"

Harm shook his head and headed upstairs to check on his children.  He
would never understand women anyway.

*************

"Who's the lucky guy, Evie?"

Evelyn looked up at her mom shyly.  "Tony Simpson," she said, taking a
bite of her ice cream.

"Tony?  Isn't he the one who wouldn't give you the time of day in grade
school?"

"Yeah," Evelyn replied.  "But he's nicer this year.  He asked me to go
on a date with him tomorrow night.  Can I go?"

Mac smiled.  "Of course you can, honey."

Evelyn got up, and gave Mac a peck on the cheek.  "Thank you!" she
exclaimed, rushing out of the kitchen.  She nearly ran into Harm.
"G'night, Dad!"

"Night," Harm replied, staring after her.  "What just happened?" he
asked Mac.

"Evie is going on her first date tomorrow."

"She's what?"  Harm's face paled and he fainted dead way.
