Mac calmed herself and began to breath for her daughter as Evelyn called out for Harm and called 911. "What is it?" Harm asked, rushing into the room with Maddie's inhaler in his hand. "Oh God!" "Come on, Maddie!" Mac cried. "Please, wake up!" Maddie obeyed her Mother and began coughing. Harm gave the inhaler to Mac, who in turn, gave it to Maddie. The little girl was very groggy. "Mom...my." "It's all right, Maddie. Here's you're medicine." Maddie took it and a minute later, she lost consciousness. Harm nearly had a heart attack. First his Mother, now Maddie. He looked helplessly at Mac. She took his hands in hers. "She's going to be fine, Harm," she whispered. ************* An hour later, Harm and Mac were sitting in the ER at La Jolla Medical Center, waiting for news on Maddie. Mac could tell that Harm was taking this especially hard. She didn't even want to know what was going through his mind. "Sarah..." he said, breaking the silence. "I can't lose her too!" Mac pulled him close to her. She didn't know exactly what to say to him. She didn't know what to say to herself! Maddie was only a little girl! "I'm sorry, Sarah," Harm whispered, gasping at the pain Mac was inflicting on his arm. She looked up at him as a tear escaped her eye. "I was so lost in my feelings, that I didn't even think about yours." "It's all right, Harm. I understand. I know you'll be there for me when I need you." Mac smiled sadly. "Sorry for hurting you like that." "No problem," he replied, giving her a peck on the lips. "Mr. and Mrs. Rabb, if you'll come this way," a nurse said to them. They stood up, Harm taking Mac's hand in his, and followed the nurse down the hall to their little girl. A doctor was leaning over Maddie, talking soothingly to her. He looked up when they approached. "Dr. Ross," he said, shaking their hands. "You have a very brave daughter." Harm smiled. "Yeah, we do. How is she?" "She's stable. It was panic attack. I'm not certain what triggered it, she wouldn't tell me. Has anything happened recently that would have caused it?" Mac nodded. "Her Grandmother, Harm's Mother, died two days ago. That might have been the cause." "Seems like the case," Dr. Ross replied. "I want to keep her overnight for observation and give her a stronger dose of the medication she's on." "So she'll be all right?" Harm asked. "She will as long as he takes it easy when you get home." Maddie finally spoke up. "But I have dance practice," she said quietly. "We'll see about that when we get home, honey, okay?" Mac said, brushing a strand of hair from her eyes. Maddie nodded, letting out a yawn. "Well," the doctor said, "a nurse will settle Maddie into a room. I'll be around to check on her later." Harm nodded and shook his hand. "Thank you for everything." "It was my pleasure," he said. **************** That night, Dr. Ross allowed Harm to stay the night in the room with Maddie. Harm was determined to help ease her fears. How, he had no idea. "Maddie, how are you feeling?" he asked. "I have a bad feeling in my tummy and my heart hurts every time I think about it." He noticed that he was starting to hyperventilate again. "It's okay, honey, I'm right here. Take slow breaths. Good girl. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you nervous, but I was hoping maybe we could talk about whatever's scaring you. It might help." She nodded slowly. "Did you know Mommy said you can be smart sometimes?" "Sometimes?" Harm asked, raising an eyebrow. "Yeah." He chuckled, but realized they were getting off the subject. "Whenever you're ready, Maddie." "Member when me and Evie were watching Harry Potter?" Harm nodded. "I thinking that since his Mommy and Daddy died when he was little, you and Mommy would die when I was little too. And... And Harry didn't know them..." Maddie was crying into Harm's shoulder now. She looked up at him. "...and I didn't know Gramma either." Harm rocked his little girl as she cried. She finally fell asleep five minutes later, and he laid her down on the bed, covering her. After placing a soft kiss on her forehead, Harm walked over to the phone. He couldn't sleep, and he knew a certain Marine who probably couldn't either. |
