Evelyn got up from the floor. She looked over at Serena. Her eyes were wide with fear. "Rena," Evelyn said, holding out her hand. "We have to go find Mommy and Daddy before those people hurt them."

"Okay," Serena replied. She took Evelyn's hand and stared at the door. "How do we get out?"

"I don't think that David guy locked it when he took Mommy," Evelyn explained. She tried the knob, which turned easily in her hand. Flashing a grin at her little sister, she peered out the door. "No one's around. Come on, Rena."

"Evie, wait!" Serena pointed to the desk.

"What is it?" She looked over. On the desk, was a phone. "You are so smart, Rena! Tell you what, you go shove those piles of books off that shelf. We need to make some noise to get them away from Mommy and Daddy. I'll call Uncle AJ real quick."

Serena nodded and climbed a chair so she could reach the shelf. "When, Evie?"

"After I talk to Uncle AJ," Evie replied, dialing the JAG office. "Aunt Harriet!" Evelyn exclaimed. What luck to get her godmother and not the new petty officer.

"Evie? Honey, are you all right? Where are you? Where's your mom?"

Evelyn shook her head. "We don't have time! I'm going to leave the phone off the hook, trace it! Rena and me have to save Mommy and Daddy!" She looked at Rena and nodded.

Harriet would have been shocked with the intelligence of the five year old, but then she remembered who her parents were. "All right--" she was cut off by a gunshot. "Oh my God, Evie, watch out for Rena, I'll get the police out there right away!"

"Come on, Rena!" Evelyn exclaimed. David ran right past them without so much as a glance. When they arrived in the room where he had come from, they froze. "Mommy! Daddy!"

They stopped in their tracks. Evelyn took a breath. "What happened to Daddy?"

"Evie, just keep Serena with you over there."

"Mac, take the girls and leave. I don't want to chance anything with Annie over there," Harm said. It felt as though someone was sitting on his chest. His eyelids were feeling heavy.

"Harm! Don't you dare leave us!" Mac cried.

"Mommy, Aunt Harriet is calling the police! I called her and left the phone off the hook so they could trace it."

Mac looked at her daughter. One hand was held close to her stomach... the sprained wrist she remembered. While the other one was wrapped protectively around her sister. "Come here, girls."

They sat on the other side of Harm. He looked up at them. "Are my Marines okay?"

"Daddy," Serena said with tears in her eyes. "Can I be Navy person?"

Harm smiled despite the pain in his chest. "If you want to, baby."

"You're going to be okay, Daddy," Evelyn said. She looked up at Mac. "Isn't he Mommy?"

Mac didn't know what to say to them. She didn't want to admit that Harm might die. Before she could say anything, FBI agents were swarming in. Someone hollered for paramedics. "Colonel Mackenzie?"

"Yes..."

"I'm Agent Bailey, FBI. We're going to get you all to the hospital."

"Thank you," Mac replied.

The paramedics rushed over to them. "Lets go. Gunshot wound to the left upper quadrant of the chest, severe blood loss, head injury. We need to get him to Bethesda Naval Hospital stat!" He looked over at Mac. "What's his name and his blood type?"

"Harmon Rabb. O positive." The man nodded. "Will he be all right? I thought he was shot near his heart."

"We're going to do our best, Ma'am," he said as they lifted they stretcher. "There should be another ambulance coming in for you and your children. I'll be sure to wait for you at the hospital to let you know what's going on with Harm."

Mac nodded. "Thank you."

As soon as they had taken Harm away, Serena and Evelyn rushed into their mother's arms in tears. "I love you both so much."
